I have a Phalacrognathus muelleri third instar larvae that has recently started chewing/scratching at the sides of his plastic tub. His tub is 800ml and has fresh flake soil (changed within the last two weeks) mixed in with a small amount of his previous flake soil from the last substrate change. He is also eating a lot of pellets all of a sudden, like four or five a day! He is gaining weight steadily and quickly. I am about 90% certain it is a male as I cannot see an Ovary spot. I have dynastes Hercules L2 grubs that have never done anything similar to this behaviour.
My questions:
1) Is this behaviour a sign of the tub being too small or the soil being bad quality?
2) Is it normal for him to eat that many pellets in a day?
3) what can I do to stop him doing this to his tub?
The tubs are round 800ml plastic tubs that have a ventilation hole covered in insect proof mesh at the top.
